Deciding how many pages my website will have

Websites range from one just page to hundreds. Your website can have as many (or few) pages as you'd like, depending on the amount of content it will hold. An organized page structure is important for your website – it serves as a guide so that users may easily find all the important information your website has to offer. If you're overwhelmed, don't worry – grab a pencil & paper and follow these simple steps.
Basic list:
  • Home
  • About Us
  • Contact

Step 1: Make a list

Make a list of the pages you want on your website. To begin, you can use the list on the right since most websites include these three pages.

Completed list:
  • Home
  • Services
  • About Us
  • Contact
  • Physicians
  • Locations
  • Insurance
  • Patient Privacy
  • New Patient Form
  • Record Request Form
  • Staff
  • Forms
  • Policies

Step 2: Add your pages to the list

Think of other pages you want on your website. What will you name them?

Assume your website is for a medical clinic – your complete list may look something like the example on the right.

Once you complete the list of pages, you now have the items that will populate your website's menu.

Step 3: Convert the list into a sitemap

A sitemap helps organize the pages in your menu so that it can be simplified into categories. This enables users to navigate your site with ease. The sitemap is simply devised of the list above, and arranged in a way that makes the most sense to you and your users. Here is the list we created in step 2, converted into a sitemap:
